South African James Egan riding the MWR Motorsports Panigale R in the latest round of the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 championship at Cadwell Park, moved himself up to 10th place in the championship standings after a fantastic race through to 11th place from 17th on the grid in what turned out to be a 2 lap sprint due to the race having to be read flagged after an incident in the opening laps.
Cadwell Park has never been a good track for me, but that all changed this year. They say you have to click with caldwell to be fast and fortunately I’ve started enjoying riding it now and feel we have clicked – I think it’s mainly been the confidence I’ve got in my bike now, but it’s really nice to be on the pace at the most difficult track around. The weekend started off great with our pace being evident from free practice and quail 1, unfortunately our luck took a turn for final quail 2 as we got a dud tyre from Pirelli, meaning we had no grip from brand new.
Unfortunately we have a fixed allocation of tyres per our class rules so couldn’t change it, meaning we had to take the lap time which was a second slower than my previous days lap time, putting us 17th on the grid. We put my old practice tyre back in for Sunday morning warm up and went 0.5s quicker than I did in quail 2 on a new tyre – very frustrating but at least positive signs that our pace was still very good for the race.
The race was the worst part of the weekend a two lots of crashes and race restarts meant we got a total of 5 laps. 3 laps from the original start and only 2 laps after the restart before another incident ended the race. Fortunately we got good starts both times and went from 17th to 12th before the first restart, but because the race was still in the first 3 laps, we had to return to original grid positions meaningI had to go back to 17th. The restart saw us jump to 11th on lap 1, before the incident on lap 2 ended our weekend early.
The positives were again a fast lap time, me feeling comfortable with the bike yet again, and our team working faultlessly. For that, thanks to Mark, Dan and Em, plus to the Moto Rapido team for their support and assistance during the weekend. A big thank you to our sponsors Pawson Commercials as we ran our pawson caldwell Special body work in purple to show our gratitude for their support, and of course to Ducati UK, Rocket 88, Leatt Protectives and everybody behind us. I can’t wait to get to Oulton Park next and get back on my Panigale R.
Another good result for James and again one that in other circumstances like the full race being ran, could have got much further up to the front. It was great to be able to run the full Pawson Commercials colours on our Panigale R this weekend and with it being Pawsons home race as such, it was our pleasure to welcome all their guests over the weekend. Steve put on a great spread for us all and the weather kept its part of the deal to make for a very enjoyable weekend.
